New Feature Alert

dont-missI added a new feature on Aye Wonder. It will make your advent calendar of happy music easier to listen to.  If you look at the bottom of the blog, you will find a blue/black bar with the name Streampad. You can pop the player out to a new page so browsing becomes easier or you can leave it as is. There are volume controls and a variety of other controls.

Always here to serve you.

dont-missI think I love music more than the average person.  I listen to it all day long. If it is a choice between movie, television or music, I’d take music every time.

But the people who make music, and trust me I’ve been around them my entire life, are nutters.

Today, or rather last night, Steven Tyler announced that he wasn’t quitting Aerosmith after-all. That at least is a sane decision, though everything leading up to it was nuttier than Christmas at Glenn Beck’s house. Tyler may or may not be serious about this but last night he appeared at a Joe Perry solo show and performed what appears to be a conciliatory Walk this Way. For more info on the non Aerosmith breakup, read the Billboard story here.

I’m pretty certain he doesn’t read Ayewonder.com

dont-missOften times, bloggers tackle a subject that someone else already did a much better job covering. What are the odds that you will show up here at Aye Wonder and change your mind about a subject because I wrote about it? Nil, I’d think. Certainly, I have an opinion and it’s usually rooted in common sense but I don’t have the time or the resources to do the exhaustive work necessary to give you a full accounting of the subject. Eet’s not my job, man. But on occasion, I do read or hear something that to me seems definitive. Usually, it’s something so incredibly commonsensical, I have to repost it. My re-posting represents my opinion, I suppose.

Say what you will about Keith Olbermann from MSNBC. He’s a blowhard like Limbaugh, like Beck, like Matthews but I like him for his eloquence and his convincing perspective. Last night, he aired one of his “special comments” about health care reform. Usually the special comments are roughly 7 minutes. This one was his entire show, an hour in length. Rather than post the entire segment, I thought I would post the last few minutes, the wrap-up, if you will. Some background: Olberman has been knee-deep in the health care system over the past 40 days because of his Dad’s illness. His perspective here is first hand.

After you get the chance to view this, I’d like to know what you think. Is he right? Wrong? Somewhere in the middle? What facts do you think he’s missing? Have a go.

Truth in Advertising

dont-missFast food restaurants deserve their reputation.  Are they convenient? Yes. Do they serve up slop? Yes, again. These photographs show the food as advertised and then again as served in their restaurants. Big diff, as the kids say.

This is the advertised McDonald’s skillet burrito

And this, the purchased one.

No matter where you live, you can’t escape bad weather. All of us can remember a scary rain storm accompanied by vicious thunder and lightening, a devastating hurricane or an incapacitating blizzard that made an indelible mark in our memory. The following video is a cyclone that hit Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. I have never seen rain like this. At around the 1:30 mark all hell breaks loose and by the end, golf ball sized hail drives the filming group inside. As Mum used to say, “it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt!”

Have a great weekend.

Many of you may know Zane Lamprey but until today, I never heard of him and his television show, Three Sheets. Three Sheets is an international pub crawl where Zane takes you through various countries and their drinking habits. In season one, episode one, Zane explores Belgium customs and its beers. In this episode, Zane, the host, samples a variety of beers, Belgium chocolates and a Brussels sprout liqueur. He looks well dressed, sane and stable. By the time he gets to Scotland in season three, episode 28, he looks like Mel Gibson’s Braveheart after consuming a lorry full of Ritalin. He clearly has had a minimum of 27 hangovers and likely more.  In this episode, Lamprey is a kilt-wearing, whisky drinking, haggis-eating fool. (It makes me home sick.) Here’s the link to the rest of his series. I have only seen a few but they are very enjoyable, especially if you are visiting the nation or area he is featuring. He also did a show about a NYC pub crawl that I haven’t been able to find. Yet.

I thought I would call your attention to two completely unrelated items that caught my eye this week . The first one is a photograph of Barack Obama that appeared on the Huffington Post the day after the election. When I saw Obama take the stage in Grant Park in Chicago after being elected I noticed his bearing seemed completely different. I noticed relief and exhaustion on his face. The authors of the Huffington Post story saw power, joy, grief and fatigue. It’s a powerful image of Barack Obama’s finest moment to date. Here’s what the authors had to say about Barack Obama as he took the stage after being elected President of the United States.

When Obama took the stage, we saw a man embodying a complex array of feeling. He looked tired, of course, and who wouldn’t be? A ten-year-old in the room, who hadn’t heard of the death of Barack’s grandmother, said “He looks sad.” It takes a deeply integrated person to let his grief be visible on a night of overwhelming victory. This is a key to his personality, and bodes well for the future of his presidency. It takes enormous strength to let your vulnerabilities rest so comfortably in yourself that they can be readily seen.

There was one emotion we’re glad was missing from Obama and the crowd in Grant Park: any sense of triumphant glee. We couldn’t help wondering if it would have been present in McCain’s supporters had the tables been turned. John McCain had to silence a few boos and jeers from his audience, but by and large they just looked sad, tired and meek.

Finally, we were deeply moved by Obama’s body language at the end, in the easy way he brought forth the other members of his and Biden’s family to share the stage. He seemed to melt into them, as if he knows deep in his bones that none of this is really about him as an individual ego. There’s a huge difference between needing to be the center of things and simply being in the middle of things. Somehow, despite all the adulation and glory (as well as the relentless attacks mounted by the other side) Obama still knows what he’s known all along: he’s one of us.

The second item is not nearly filled with the gravitas of the first item. This week in Kappa, Illinois a young golfer named Curt Hocker had…wait for it….5 holes-in-one in one week, including two in one round. According to a Golf Digest study, the odds of making one hole-in-one range from 5,000 to 33,000 to 1 but making 2 in one round the odds skyrocket to 67 million to one. Unbelievable. But here’s where the story gets a wee bit sticky for me. Hocker, also recorded 2 double eagles in the same round earlier this summer. A double eagle is three under par on one hole. For example, in order to score a double eagle on a par 5, one would need to hole out in 2 shots. It’s not impossible but check out these odds. Getting 1 double eagle is quoted at 6 million to one. There is no quote for two in one round. Here’s more perspective…Between 1983 to 2003, there were 631 aces on the PGA Tour but just 56 double-eagles – and never more than 6 in one year. Curt Hocker, congratulations but I hope you don’t mind if I am a little bit skeptical.

Michael Franti used to be an angry young man. His hip-hop was in your face and antagonizing. No longer. Franti, the leader of Spearhead, is now a socially conscious singer with a brand new attitude. He’s been singing about problems, hope and solutions for over a decade and now his new album, All Rebel Rockers, may be the vehicle that finally gets Franti the wider audience he deserves. Chris and I saw him in concert the last time he was through Boston and if he’s coming to your town; See the show. It’s infectious.

This new music video, recorded in Jamaica, is my favorite track on the new album. The tune is called Say Hey (I Love You). It’s hip-hop, it’s reggae, it is fun as hell and it is positively joyous. I hope you like it too.

AND Happy Halloween to one and all! Guising anyone?
