I thought that the Olympics’ opening ceremony was one of the most incredible sights that I ever witnessed on television. Christine and I were entertaining friends and while cleaning up at the end of the night, we turned on the tv. We were gobsmacked. The torch lighting, the pageantry, the choreography were all spectacular. China does a lot of things wrong with respect to human rights but this is no backwards nation. We are on notice.
☞I don’t know about you but I could care less about John Edwards’ indescretion. I read a great article on the Time Magazine website and thought I would share it with you. Here’s the link. I really would like to know if you think the author, Joe Klein, nails this issue.
☞Here’s to Isaac Hayes who died on Sunday while working out on his home treadmill. Most know Hayes for his powerful, 1971 soundtrack, Shaft or his turn as Chef on South Park decades later. Hayes had an incredible legacy of songwriting for Stax records in the 60’s before Shaft. One great story…Hayes and his writing partner, David Porter wrote the Sam & Dave massive hit, Hold On! I’m Comin’. This was not about sex, as many people thought. The true story is that Porter was sitting on the toilet, when Hayes walked into the office restroom to retrieve Porter to get back to work. Porter’s reply to Hayes…you guessed it: Hold On! I’m Comin’.
More Random Thoughts Tuesday after the jump…
☞Here’s a question for you: what were we really in a position to do when Russia bombed the hell out of Georgia? Strong letter to follow? Wag our finger? Everyone condemned Russia. But that means nothing. We are in no position to do anything about it. Our military is stretched and our economy is a mess. How does that feel?
☞Our summer here in New England has been wierd this year. Everyday, it seems, it rains. I can’t remember a worse summer. How about where you live?
☞Sure, the Olympics are about sportsmanship but make no mistake about it, it’s about winning. Which brings me to the Aye Wonder quote of the week:
If you don’t try to win you might as well hold the Olympics in somebody’s back yard. ~Jesse Owens, 4 time Track & Field Gold Medalist at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.
☞If you’re thinking about moving your web presence, as I did, here’s what to expect. Your traffic will drop to 25% of prior levels. Google and other search engines won’t find you immediately. Everyone will need to get comfortable with your new site for commenting, reading etc. Would I do it again? Yep. But I won’t need to do it again. I am very happy with Ayewonder.com. Hope you are too.
☞I found this story to be very amusing. On Fox New Sunday, Chris Wallace was interviewing John McCain’s campaign manager, Rick Davis. Fox News, despite it’s Fair and Balanced self described calling card, is widely regarded as the epicenter of conservative tilted broadcast news. In this instance, even Wallace couldn’t placate the Right as he called out Davis on a string of lies. Read a sample of the transcript here.
☞By the way, if you’re a golfer thinking about visiting Scotland, I am beginning to fill out the page that you see above. I will continue to add posts and by all means, if you have questions, please ask them.
☞Anyone want to take a guess who this is? New album, old artist is your only hint.

☞Do you know the story about Californian Steve Fossett, the wealthy adventurer, who went missing in 2007 while flying a light plane across the Nevada desert? As you may recall, after an exhaustive search there was no wreckage or body found. Now, after being legally declared dead early this year, two U.K. newspaper are postulating that Fossett staged his death/disappearance to escape money and marital woes. This story and the story of Clark Rockefeller of Boston have me fascinated. Stay tuned.
Aye wonder.
