This past weekend on Cape Cod began one day earlier with a low key celebration of my best friend, Murph’s, 50th birthday. Low key and Murph aren’t usually two things you would see in the same sentence but hell, we all are getting older. Murph, like me, is retired and is also getting antsy about returning to work. We once considered going into business together but there was already a DiCarlo & Murphy House Painting company.
Part of the reason for the low key Thursday night was Christine and I were expecting the arrival on Friday of five journalists under the age of six and our friends, their parents. I haven’t heard so many who, what, why, where, when and hows since I wrote for my high school newspaper. From late Friday afternoon until midday Sunday, I felt like I was giving a non-stop deposition. I am the oldest of five siblings, have lots of nieces & nephews but in 3 short days, I regained an appreciation for my parents and all parents.
More on 5 of the sweetest kids (and their parents) on the other side of the jump.
I am obviously being facetious about the grilling I received. In reality, I didn’t do a thing. But it was exhausting watching our friends Candace & Dave, Sue & Dave tend to their childrens’ every need. Over the years, the parents’ visits to Camp DiCarlo were without children. Now, the itinerary is reversed. No longer do we stay up late and rise late. Now, there are diapers to change, breakfasts to make, questions to answer and smiles to coax. I have to say, it wasn’t a typical weekend but Chris and I had a blast!
How could you not? We laughed all weekend long. On Friday, Max ate a chocolate ice cream. The result was side-splitting. He knew it, we knew it and he played it long and hard for laughs. All weekend, his comic genius was on display. Pretty impressive for turning 4 years old on Friday!
Max’s older brother, Gus, is quieter and more thoughtful. He asks good questions machine gun style and you can almost hear his brain crunching his new found information. I think his weekend was made complete when I let him drive my golf cart (under close supervision by his dad and I in a wide open space).
Their sister, Tess, is the newest sibling and a darling one at that. She and our dog, Grover, bonded immediately. Anywhere Tess was, Grover was sure to be in the immediate vicinity. Tess was a charmer all weekend and full of smiles.
Nicholas and Ava arrived one day later, on Saturday morning, with their parents, Sue & Dave. I missed most of the excitement of that day because I didn’t make the beach run with everyone. The house felt eerily quiet with everyone gone.
Ava was interesting to watch. I have never seen such an expressive face on a child. Her coy lookaway smiles were hilarious. She was working the crowd and was damn good at it. You really can see how smart she is by the way she takes in new stimuli and wears it on her face.
Nicholas is a sweet young boy who is, like his younger sister, processing new information at the speed of sound. He wanted to know why, why, why about everything. It seemed like we were all on question answering duty at some point over the weekend.
Sue & Dave, Candy & Dave, thank you for sharing your 5 wonderful children with Chris and I. While your visits to Camp DiCarlo may never be the same as in years gone by, the newer generation gives us a different, richer experience. I can’t think of a way that our weekend could have been more fun. You and your families are welcome to Cape Cod anytime. What are you doing next weekend?
All my love,
Uncle Mikey
